Tai Chi Yang Style
Tai Chi Chuan translated means the “Natural way” and is the most widely practised system of exercise in the world. Nowadays most people practice Tai Chi Chuan for health, relaxation and as a martial art. Tai Chi has been shown to be highly successful in alleviating health problems and dramatically reducing stress and tension created by daily living. There is no such thing as a totally peaceful life, but there is a way in which we can manage our health and spirit and enjoy the benefits of a prolonged fulfilled life with our loved ones.
Tai Chi’s present form is roughly a thousand years old and what makes Tai Chi Chuan unusual is that softness and yielding are used to unlock your own potential and allow you to overcome, and eventually replace, your fears and anxieties with beauty, grace and understanding. It is obvious but not always recognised by most of us that our main opponent is ourselves. We often do the complete opposite to what is correct and therefore become the creator of our own problems and health issues. The main essence of Tai Chi Chuan,, if practised daily, is to pursue health through a balanced and calmed state of mind, so much so that those around you also then start to benefit from the calm energy omitted by you. In Tai Chi we call this yielding, giving way to those problems in your life you would normally confront and resist to the point of exhaustion. Yielding is not a form of weakness, for to yield correctly one must have understanding and strength from within and not react to situations through anger or misunderstanding, but to apply ones own sensitivity and emotions correctly.
Tai Chi is based on a set of forms designed to strengthen the body and the mind simultaneously. The initial forms are practised slowly as this allows us to work on our posture, naturally strengthening our bodies, calming the mind and improving our breathing. Tai Chi is suitable for all age groups regardless of limitations. Sufficient practice of the forms is important and is often practised twice a day by most students for around ten to twenty minutes a session.
The forms are built around the three aspects of Tai Chi, health, relaxation and heart work. All three will be taught at the new centre, though students will be able to practice any combination of the three. Its is recommended that classes are attended weekly, though students will be welcome to attend as many times as they choose.
Tai Chi Chuan is practised in such a way, that you are not asked to perform extreme positions as in some forms of Yoga. Tai Chi is practised within your own limitations and after a while you will become flexible enough to expand your postures and your mind as your health and fitness improves. The individual forms are broken down into individual postures and practised each week until the entire form is joined appearing to be seamless flowing from one posture into the next.
The regular practice of Tai Chi Chuan will improve, circulation, muscular tension, bone conditions, poor posture and above all relax the mind which in turn will provide you with a natural calmness and peace of mind.
With regards to self defence, Tai Chi Chuan is renowned as being one of the most efficient forms of self defence, however one must study the forms and work with a Master who is prepared to teach this aspect of Tai Chi. The self defence forms of Tai Chi are based on energy and therefore one does not have to be muscular or big in size. In fact the smaller and gentler a person is, the more effective in self defence they will become.Tai Chi is based on softness and yielding, in other words being able to understand the energy that is being given to you by another person and how best to react in any situation. Not many people are aware that you are already practising self defence every day as you have to deal with all sorts of energy from people who show negative energy and those who are upset or ill and may be in need of our precious energy and support. All this tends to drain us and we often do not know how to preserve this energy and replenish ourselves.
I hope you will join me in the journey of a life time, and come along to the centre to hopefully enrich your lives with learning an ancient but most intelligent art in the form of Tai Chi.
